The child's pleading eyes and outstretched hand dug at painful memories John had worked hard to bury. When he turned away, stern eyes and hands on hips awaited him.
"You can't even spare a smile for that boy, John?"
John blew out a tired sigh. "To what end, Mary? That boy's fate is as meat for the predators out there. Or meat for the Magistrate's axe – just like what happened to Jimmy."
"Between Honor & Glory"
Martyn took a steadying breath and peered around the boulder. The dragon appeared in no hurry to devour them, taking its time stretching and folding its leathery wings. It wasn't as big as a longboat as the stories said, but it was still huge – four times the size of a horse, plus the tail, long neck, and a head the size of a coffin. It was beautiful in a chilling sort of way, its skin a scaly rainbow of glittering copper, amber, emerald and bronze, the colors changing in liquid ripples as the fading sunlight swept across its body while it crept toward their feeble hideout.

Joe stared out at the old swing-bridge in the middle of the river. Diving from that bridge was the only thing he’d ever accomplished in his life, and if he could do it once, he could do it again. Then things would be different. But the bridge looked vaguely sinister now, a rusting steel skeleton balanced on a concrete finger thrusting out of the dark water. And then there was the boy-in-the-cow.

"Waterfalls & Lava Floes"
Warning - going further is not recommended! Do not approach the volcano! But we could see a steaming cloud up ahead, promising views of molten lava. We looked right and noticed sulfuric fumes billowing up, bringing back warnings of “don’t get surrounded by lava”. As I looked left, I heard a yelp of surprise. Looking back – and then down – I found Paul hip-deep in pumice.
